Presentation      -     The Terroir    -     The Vines

PRESENTATION

After a 10-year career in the Air Force, I went back to school in 1997 to train to be a vine-grower and follow in the footsteps of my grandfather, Louis GUIRAUD, an engineer specialised in agronomy.
I passed the Viticulture-Oenology Estate Management diploma one year later and then set about creating Château Lamblin, investing in all the necessary farming equipment and renovating the winery facilities. Thus started the obstacle course that faces newcomers to the profession, with the added pleasures of all the red tape just to spice things up! Today, at the dawn of the 3rd millennium, I have the pleasure of presenting everything that has been achieved with the help of my family, in-laws and friends - the first fruits of my passion for winemaking for your enjoyment. We should not forget, as my grand-father said to my father and my father then said to me, that:
"After the effort comes the joy!" I hope you enjoy your visit… Francis

THE TERROIR   top of the page

Château Lamblin lies in the area of Bourg sur Gironde, in the heart of the vineyards of the Côtes de Bourg appellation. The area enjoys a very particular micro-climate and geographical situation, due to the influence of the Bec d’Ambès in the estuary, and the soils are of the clay-limestone and silt-gravel types. It boasts all the natural characteristics that are ideal for vines to flourish.

THE VINES    top of the page

The surface area of the vineyard is 4 hectares (just under 10 acres), making it a nicely manageable family-run estate.

The vineyard is planted with the following noble vine varieties:

- Merlot (80%). The main grape variety in the Bordeaux region. The Merlot grapes ripen earlier than the Cabernet and are best suited to moist, clay soils. It produces an exuberant wine, aristocratic and smooth, which mellows out the slightly austere character of the Cabernet. It reaches its best earlier than Cabernet wines, however. These full-bodied wines are often marked by animal aromas, as well as underwood and truffles.

- Cabernet Sauvignon (10%). The most famous red grape variety in the world, often grown on lighter, well aerated soils. The wines stand out primarily by their powerful blackcurrant aromas and, after maturing in oak barrels, by their bouquet of cedar, cigar box and sometimes tobacco. These small grapes with their thick skin produce juice that is rich in colouring substances and tannins - the key assets when it comes to ageing.

- Malbec (10%). Known under the name "Auxerrois" in the Cahors region, "Cot" in the Loire or sometimes "Teinturin" (due to its intense colour), the Malbec variety produces robust, slightly rustic wines that are ideal for laying down and have a bouquet of fermented straw. The age of the vines on the oldest plots varies between 15 and 45 years.
